I realized that I haven't really blogged about Emmery's personality. I guess I always thought she was too young to pigeon-hole her into a certain "type." But I would say that we are definitely starting to see her personality come through. I wanted to get it written down because I want to be able to go back and see if she is still the same as a toddler/child/teenager. The first word I would use to describe her is curious. I know many babies are curious at this age, but she just seems like she cannot be satisfied until she learns everything about everything. She will pick something up and study it, try to take it apart and see how it works. Once she is satisfied, she'll move onto something else and do the same thing. She doesn't really play with her toys much because she has seen them all before, there is nothing new there. So she explores things around the house. Lately she likes to open the garbage can. We've put child locks on all the cabinets in the kitchen. Any time the refrigerator door opens, she makes a bee-line for it! She must investigate what is in that fridge!
She is also pretty serious. Not that she's mad all the time, but she doesn't really smile/giggle very easily. Something has to be really funny for her to laugh. We will tickle her and swing her around and she'll just kinda look at us. Lately I have been playing hide-and-seek with her. I'll run ahead of her and then hide around the corner, and she'll slowly creep up and I'll jump out. She giggles away, it's so cute and one of the only times I get to hear her giggle.
I would say that she seems pretty smart, although I'm not really sure how that can be measured at such a young age! She said her first word at about 9 months, which was "uh-oh." The interesting thing is that she only says it in context, usually when she drops something. After that she started saying "thank you." She also will only say it in context. When we hand her a pacifier, when we give her a snack, sometimes when I lift her out of the crib. It's pretty cute.
Her eating habits are starting to change a bit. When we were feeding her purees, she pretty much ate anything. We started finger foods at about 9 months, and she would still eat just about anything. Lately though, she will have a preference, and if she doesn't like it she throws it over the side of the high chair. It makes for some interesting clean-up on my part. Tonight she had blueberries, cut-up chicken, and toast with cheese. She ate the blueberries, tossed the chicken over the side, and devoured the toast. And if I am feeding her something with a spoon (yogurt, soup, oatmeal) she wants to feed herself with the spoon. This usually ends up with the food being flung across the room. So I will give her a spoon to play with while I feed her with another spoon.
Right now she sleeps great. (I say "right now" because I KNOW that this can/will change). We usually put her down at about 7:30 and she'll sleep until about 6:45. She is still taking two naps a day.
We are currently weaning her from breast milk to cow's milk. I am pumping 3 times a day, and she is drinking two sippy cups with a mix of breast milk and cow's milk. By the time her birthday rolls around she will be all done with breast milk, and more importantly, I will be DONE pumping! So looking forward to that. She hasn't taken a bottle in probably 3 weeks, and doesn't even need one to go to bed at night.
She really is such a good baby, we are very blessed. It makes me a little nervous about this next one due in October. I sure hope we can win the lottery twice and are blessed with two good babies.
